We had a full complement of 6 members
attending Winter Skills training this year. The training itself
was delivered by Emma O Shea ,working for
Talisman
Mountaineering, who did a fantastic job of dealing with the
varied objectives of the group. Raymond, Mark, Viktor, Emma B,
Tom and Garry spent Saturday practicing movement skills on a
patch of neve buried under the fresh snow before moving on to
some ice axe breaking followed by an introduction to winter
navigation.
The weather on Sunday was misty with
widespread white out above 700m a marked contrast to the views
of the previous day. However it was ideal weather for what the
group wanted to do – Winter Navigation. We headed up from the
Ciste car park to the summit of Cnap Coire na Speaidhe where we
had lunch before dropping down to visit the snow holes in Ciste
Mhearad. We headed across to the Ptarmigan before descending
back to the car park. With most of the day spent in white out
this was a brilliant navigation day, don’t know how Emma managed
to organise it!
Thanks to all that came along and Emma for
being a great instructor.
