This trip leaves by minibus from St. Margaret’s School (AB10 1RU) at 8:30am.
The Hill of Wirren (678m) is a Graham, and (potentially!) a superb viewpoint for the Grampians to the north and west and the lowlands of Strathmore to the south. There are several aircraft crash sites on the Hill.
The walk will start at about 10am from Dalbrack in Tarfside, and go up a track following the historic Priest’s or Whisky Road to the Clash of Wirren (a gully which overlooks Glen Lethnot), from where it will ascend the shoulder of West Wirren to reach the summit. The descent will be over East Wirren and the Hill of Corathro, and then to Edzell either by the Rocks of Solitude in the North Esk, or more directly, depending on time, conditions and preferences.
Possible end-points (if not Edzell itself) at Bridgend in Glen Lethnot, or at end of small public road up RHS of North Esk, a few hundred yards beyond Dalbog. This will be decided on the day.
Bad-weather or shorter options could be (i) Cairn Robie NW of Tarfside, followed by The Retreat, or (ii) Glen Lethnot, visited by few or possibly up to Sheiling of Sauch (rough shelter). Other options may be available, but as the minibus will have to be driven directly round to Edzell these may be limited. If you wish to walk a different route, be advised that the minibus will remain in Glen Esk from 10am until about 2pm, when it will be taken round to Edzell for the pick-up of the Presidents Party. Please email me with any personal suggested route and, if possible, this will be accommodated.
Distance: ~17km Ascent: ~600m
Nature of the terrain: Mostly land rover and hill tracks with perhaps some boggy ground.
Details of equipment: Please bring full waterproofs, an extra warm layer, hat, gloves, adequate food & water for yourself, sun cream / sunglasses (if required), a personal first-aid kit, a map of the area & a working compass.
Refreshments at end of Walk – Time will be allowed at the end of the walk to get a drink/coffee in Edzell, from where we should be on the road to Aberdeen by 4pm, arriving back about 5.30pm
