Meall a’ Bhuachaille – 17th Oct

Saturday 17th October

Departure Time At St. Margaret’s Girls School: 07:00 . Pick up may be possible on route to Aviemore.

The intention for this day meet is to start from the Glenmore centre and visit the top of Meall a’Bhuachaille while also traversing all of the minor hill tops along the ridge of the north of this Corbett. Both routes are described in a counter clockwise direction, but may be walked clockwise to keep the wind to our backs if that seems a more pleasant option. This route often provides excellent views of the Northern Corries, which, if we are lucky, may have received an early dusting of snow, and of the forests that surround the area. The longer walk from Meall a’Bhauchaille to Craiggowrie provides a quiet route that should prove entertaining regardless of the weather conditions.

Option A: From the Glenmore centre walk through the Ryvoan Pass via Lochan Uaine for a brief stop at the Ryvoan bothy before ascending the steep, but well maintained track up Meall a’Bhuachaille. From the summit, we will head roughly north west along a wide ridge towards Craiggowrie. From there we will head south westly down hill towards the forest whereupon we shall follow the track back towards the Glenmore centre. There is an option to lengthen the walk around Loch Morlich if desired.

Option A Distance: ~17km Ascent: ~800m

Option B: Starting from the Glenmore centre we will walk northwards through the forest following the track alongside Allt Coire Chondlaich towards the summit of Meall a’Bhuachaille before following the remainder of Option A. If we are forced to take this option due to path closures I will strongly recommend that we add on an extra exploration or walk.

Option B Distance: ~14km Ascent: ~730m

Level of difficulty for President’s Party:  A moderate day out that’s mostly on well defined tracks or an obvious ridge, but with one potentially awkward decision to make while descending from Craiggowrie towards the forest.

Nature of the terrain: Mostly good. Some boggy ground descending from Craiggowrie
